When using certain add-on aircraft in Flight Simulator X that were originally developed for Flight Simulator 2004, you may experience a problem in which the virtual cockpit windows become opaque when it rains.
To work around this issue, you can replace a set of files in your Flight Simulator X installation with the Flight Simulator 2004 versions.
Instructions:
First, backup the files that you’re going to replace. To do this:
- Locate the folder called Texture in your Flight Simulator X installation. The default location is:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Texture
- Create a new folder called "Backup" or something similar within the Texture folder.
- Select all 32 of the files named VCRain*.bmp (VCRainMoving0000.bmp, VCRainStopped000.bmp, etc.) and move them into the "Backup" folder you’ve just created.
Next, copy the alternate versions of the files into the Flight Simulator X Texture folder:
- Download the following .ZIP file and extract the files from it:
FS9VCRain.ZIP
-Or-
If you have Flight Simulator 2004 installed, you can find the VCRain*.bmp files here (default location):
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator 9\Texture.
- Paste these replacement versions of the VCRain*.bmp into the Flight Simulator X Texture folder.
Note: As an alternative, our friends the add-on developers at Flight 1 have created a tool that automatically installs replacement textures that they’ve created, and they’ve graciously made it available for free. This tool and the files it installs were created voluntarily by a third party and are not supported by Microsoft.
Their tool is available here:
