| | Does FSX require Vista and DirectX 10? | | No. Just Microsoft® Windows® XP SP2. In the Fall of 2007, we’ll release an update that will enable Flight Simulator to take advantage some of the new capabilities in DirectX 10. |
| | Can I use multiple monitors? | | Definitely. In fact, Flight Simulator's ability to display multiple windows on more than one monitor at a time creates a more realistic cockpit environment. You can use a center monitor to display the aircraft instrument panel and the outside view ahead of the cockpit, and use another monitor to display the radio stack, throttle quadrant, GPS, or any of the other pop-up panels available on a particular aircraft. Aside from additional monitors, you'll need a video card that can support multiple monitors, or a system that can support multiple video cards. |

| | Will my joystick work with Flight Simulator X? | | If your joystick works with other games on your computer, it should work with Flight Simulator X. Most modern joysticks use a USB interface. Most older joysticks plug into a game port (usually integrated with a sound card or the computer’s mother board). If you have a game port joystick your computer must have a game port (or you can purchase a game port to USB adapter).
Flight Simulator X is compatible with joysticks, yokes, game pads, and other controllers supported by Microsoft Windows and the DirectInput device standard. Many products feature different configurations, so refer to your controller's documentation for its button assignments. Before you fly, make sure your joystick or other controller is plugged into your computer, enabled in the Windows Control Panel, and calibrated properly. Also make sure you have the latest device drivers. If in doubt, download and install them from the manufacturer's Web site. |
| | Who builds Flight Simulator? | | The Flight Simulator team includes designers, project managers, programmers, artists, writers, and testers. Many team members are real-world pilots, and a bunch of us are obsessed simmers who leave work, go home, and boot up Flight Simulator just for fun. We buy add-ons, visit community Web sites and forums, and attend air shows and conventions around the world. Basically, we're passionate, dedicated individuals who love aviation and flight simulation as much as you do! |
| | Why should I upgrade to Flight Simulator X? | | Flight Simulator X features everything you've always loved about Flight Simulator, as well as new aircraft, breathtaking graphics, and new gameplay elements. A completely overhauled multiplayer system lets you fly online with others, share your aircraft, or be an air traffic controller (Deluxe version only). Missions provide structure to your experience. For the first time, the Flight Simulator world is alive with automobile and truck traffic, moving boats and ships, and animal life. Airports feature moving jetways, fuel trucks, and baggage carts. To learn more about what's new, see Information for Veteran Users. |
| | Do I have to fly the missions, or can I use Flight Simulator X the same way I've always used Flight Simulator? | | Just as in previous versions, you can still make your own fun. Go to Free Flight to select a plane, pick an airport, set the weather, and fly on your own terms. Go to Missions for a more structured experience. Missions include briefings, and you're evaluated on your performance. Succeed, and you'll earn rewards. Start with tutorial missions, then work your way through the missions that appeal to you. Beat the record on a Red Bull race course. Take a sightseeing flight over Hawaii. Fly supplies to climbers in the Alaskan Range. From rescue missions to realistic airline flights, there's something for everyone. |
| | What is the "Shared Aircraft" feature all about? | | In a Flight Simulator X multiplayer session you can share an aircraft with someone else. Only one player can move the flight controls at a time, and you can transfer control back and forth. While you can each set your own views, everything else is synchronized-from the instruments and switches to the flaps position. Sharing an aircraft is great for getting or giving some instruction, flying as a crew, or just flying with a friend. |
| | Is my home airport in Flight Simulator X? | | Flight Simulator X features more than 24,000 airports located on every continent. If aircraft land there in the real world, then you can probably land there in Flight Simulator. |
| Compatibility and Upgrades |
| | Will my Flight Simulator 2004 aircraft and scenery work in Flight Simulator X? | | Some add-ons for previous versions of Flight Simulator will work when installed into Flight Simulator X, while others will require updates from the developer. The good news is that our Software Development Kit (SDK) is included on the Deluxe version DVDs, and we've been working with developers to ensure that updates will happen faster than ever before. If you have add-ons for previous versions of Flight Simulator, your best bet is to contact the developers to find out their plans regarding Flight Simulator X compatibility |
